History of Plainfield
Plainfield was actually chartered as a city twice.  The first time was in 1839, when attempts to establish a municipal government failed, leading Plainfield to fall under township jurisdiction.  Decades later, community leaders attempted to establish the town as its own entity once again in 1904.  This time, they were successful.

In Plainfield’s early days, Main Street provided the backdrop for an event that brought the town national attention.  Residents who were disgruntled over a highway-improvement bill vetoed by then-President Martin Van Buren staged a prank in which his stagecoach was overturned on US 40 (Main Street), sending him sprawling into the mud.  He was visiting the area to rally his constituents for the 1844 election.
