During the 1700s and 1800s, most businesses and manufacturers only marketed their products locally.  Many used area river systems and nearby communities to broaden their business communication.  It wasn’t until the early 20th century that marketing really developed into a robust profession.  The arduousness of early travel and communication limitations limited the areas where businesses could advertise and deliver products.  This meant that most products were only designed to meet the needs of a small, local community.

With its location along the Whitewater River, trading occurred between many small communities in the area.  Soon, the area developed into a crossroads.  The development of the National Road, the first one built by the US government, soon became a major route for pioneers traveling west during the 19th century.  This increased the opportunities for businesspeople to travel and share information about their wares.

This earned the city the title of the “cradle of recorded jazz.”

History of Richmond

The first Europeans settlers arrive in the area in 1806.  They were a group of Quaker families from North Carolina.  This was the early part of the westward expansion in America.  The Quakers remain an important part of the community today. 

Charles Francis Jenkins, an area resident, developed a motion picture file in 1894.  Calling it the Phantoscope projected, he earned a patent in 189e.  Thomas Edison, intrigued by the creation, purchased a modified version and marketed it as Edison’s Vitascope to show films in vaudeville theaters in New York City.    

As mentioned, many prominent public figures came to the area to speak.  These included Frederick Douglas, Carrie Nation and US Senator, Henry Clay.  Later, many great jazz musicians recorded at Gennett Studios.

Industry developed during the late 19th century around several lawnmower manufacturers earning the city the nickname “the Lawnmower capital”.  Davis, Motomower, F&N and Dille-McGuire were all prominent in the lawnmower industry.  Other manufacturers include Gaar-Scotts (farm equipment) and The Davis Aircraft Co. (parasol wing monoplanes).  Wayne Agricultural Works moved into the area to produce horse drawn vehicles.  By the 1950s, they had developed into a large manufacturer of buses and school buses.

The city continues to be a productive community.  Industry has supported a robust arts community and continued the area’s growth.
